Long Live Life!

source: marinafilm.com

November 29th was an important date in Yugoslav history, the Day of the Republic, a celebration of immeasurable importance that gave birth to innumerable street names.   So I will use its approach to broach the arrival of a documentary film made about Marina Abramovic, artist born the day after Nov.29th in Yugoslavia while the republic still existed.  Refraining from nostalgia about a country long since transformed, I would like simply to introduce you to this silly fact about the artist's life.

For me, Abramovic's art evokes images of organs in the body, perhaps because they are as purposeful and essential as is her art while at the same time being difficult to view.  Within strict limits she creates such wonder and provokes a disgusting amount of emotion through her performance.  Legitimizing performance art and challenging herself and our world at the same time for several decades now.  At a glowing 66 years which she will reach this Friday Nov. 30th, Marina Abramovic is indeed present as the title of the retrospective of her life’s work The Artist is Present suggested, one thing you will feel while viewing her performances is the immediacy of life.  Her performance at the MoMa retrospective culminated in her sitting immobile at a table for seven and a half hours daily for three months while visitors sat across and various reactions ensued.

The film documents Marina’s life and work as she prepared for this retrospective of her life’s work at the MoMa back in 2010.   Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present finally makes its way to Chicago beginning next Saturday, December 8th through Thursday, December 13th at the Siskel Film Center.
