How we familiarize ourselves with other cultures varies as
much as our learning styles do.
Some of us choose to look at statistics; population and
economic progress or digress being factors. Others focus perhaps on scientific advancements offered by a
given culture.
How to define a culture
is not something I will attempt to do.
My immediate interest lies in the music and dance generated and
shared by any given culture. It is perhaps in these moments of freedom and movement that a culture can be intimately experienced.
One way to learn about different peoples is by attending some events at this year's SummerDance, which offers a glimpse into a variety of cultures
through music. The events began on July
11th and will continue until mid-September. Musical tastings range from Indian folk music
of Orchestra Saregama to Gypsy/Hungarian dishes of Goranie with quite a bit of
Latin and ballroom spices sprinkled throughout, not to forget the nuevo flamenco
zest of El Payo. The events begin with
dance lessons offered from 6-7pm, followed by music from 7:30 til 9. All events take place just south of Grant Park
at 601 S. Michigan. If you are as afraid of organized dance as I am, don't fret, come later and enjoy the sounds in your own chaotic fashion.
