Driving has never been such a joy until this week when I got to honk my horn in support of CPS: where children are our future.
Random noise making to show solidarity with those that work
for schools that taught me: gladly!
There was a teacher strike in 1987, my first-day outfit for
third grade was picked out and impatiently waiting to be donned but it had to
wait, 19 long days it waited, at which point the weather was cooler and I had
to pick a new ensemble.
I was part of
the group that cried when I first learned of the strike, this time and back in
1987, then not due solely to outfit choice but because school was such a large part of my world and oh so much fun! Now due to the lack of appreciation and devotion we show to our educators and
students which makes me sick. I am willing and
able to write today and learn always because of CPS teachers and staff like
Mrs. Rodman, Mrs. Garrett, Mr. Chesler, Ms. Williams, Mr. Swain, Mr. Gold, Mr.
Mugavero, Mr. Peña, Mr. Carone, Mr. and Mrs. Barshop and Ms. Kelley at Gray Elementary to name a
few that I owe much thanks to.
Whether or not an agreement is reached by Monday is
irrelevant as there is no quick fix to this type of problem. If anything I hope that all of this honking
woke most of us up and reminded you as it did me of where you came from and
where you and the future are going.
Politics aside, I'm just along for the ride. Red shirts on the subway, yeah, they deserve better pay. So do I, and so do you, but who gets to choose?
ReplyDeleteoh boy bluepunker. i'm not interested in deciding who gets what, i am simply appreciating people without whom i wouldn't be writing complete beautiful sentences. no parlor tricks for me :)
