Summer is here and along with it the joys of the urban outdoors. Crowded neighborhood festivals have begun; delicious bratwurst,
sauerkraut and hearty German beer were to be had at Lincoln Square’s Maifest
this past weekend. Traditional German
polka music to be heard and folkloric kitsch was on view for all kinds of
ardent laughter.
Jumping to present day happenings of German music, we are
led to Millennium Park this coming Thursday. This summer we must bid farewell to the regular world music
Thursday nights and welcome a new series titled: Loops and Variations which features some interesting electronic
musicians. The first of which is Jan Jelinek this Thursday, June 7th at 6:30pm. He will be performing with fellow Berliner
Andrew Pekler, variations of music by synthesizer pioneer Ursula Bogner. Other artists on the bill that evening include
Chris Clark, and Casino versus Japan. If most of these names are as unfamiliar to you as they are to me, then I vote for
familiarization and learning. The world
music evenings brought to our attention much diverse and bright sound from
around the globe and so I hope that this change of musical menu will do the
same for a city starving for variety, at least when it comes to the range of
music offered at outdoor spaces.
