Is assuredly what you’ll get at the Hyde Park Art Center.
A rarity in a time concerned with seeing and doing a lot in
the smallest amount of time possible, when being busy is valued and people
watching is altogether overlooked. Importance is unfortunately given to how much was seen and heard as opposed to what was actually experienced.
At the Hyde Park Art Center you may not see a large amount of work but what you do see will make an impression. The center offers two floors which showcase emerging and
established artists. The current exhibition, Hairy Blob plays with concepts of
time through various mediums. The time suggested in this exhibit is a present one, not infused with the scents of nostalgia, a time that addresses the now, that is perhaps not so busy but watches the people passing and offers comments. The name
may imply a mess, a childhood monster or a cuddly stuffed animal. The exhibition however is clear, provoking and organized
in such a fashion that evolves with the artist while continuing to engage the audience. By changes I refer to ongoing
modifications or additions to the work on display. For example, Becky Alprin
was shifting the companion piece to her sculpture during my visit, seen in the photo above.
A pleasant addition will take place on July 20th when there will be a live audio-visual
performance by Nadav Assor and David Davidovsky which will complement Assor’s
video projection Strip/Lakeshore East that runs on the catwalk of the Jackman Goldwasser gallery and can be seen
from inside as well as outside the gallery during the evening hours. In keeping with the theme of quality over quantity, while in the neighborhood, stop in at Jimmy's aka Woodlawn Tap, only the necessary items on the menu, less choice more taste!
