Revival of the Fittest

We are constantly recycling elements of the past. From platform shoes and high-waisted jeans to the renaissance of backyard gardening, healthy ideas and products return for another try with a new generation.
Thus appears to be the fate of The Chicagoan magazine as well, it has been revived with a fresh approach.  The original Chicagoan ran for about 10 years during the late 20’s and early 30’s.  The goal was to report on the arts, culture and societal aspects of the city.  Today’s Chicagoan will also address these topics but from a wider Midwestern scope not limited to just Chicago.  The magazine is bi-annual and some copies of the first issue are still available.  A hefty 194 page magazine, sans advertisements, a rarity these days.  Since the magazine is set up as a nonprofit, it hopes to create a new model for publishing; one built around you, me and community.  Less ads=more fun!  Wonderful photographs on strong paper along with well-written articles make The Chicagoan a magazine to treasure.  I’ve had my copy for several months and have yet to read all the articles which I surely will as I have learned much from what I’ve read so far. Not only about Chicago, but about Vienna, atomic postcards, and an amazingly innovative architectural firm’s plans for our fair city.  Cheers to a great first issue and many more to come as sometimes reworking the past can offer a welcome energy for the future.
