To quote the Beastie Boys, although here I mean crafty in
the honest to goodness sense applying to both sexes.
That’s the kind of folk that’ll be here for next weekend’s Renegade Craft Fair on Division between Damen and Paulina. This
fair celebrates people who make things and do it well. Food and drink will be provided as well as
music from DJs of Dusty Groove, Reckless and CHIRP radio. Altogether it sounds like a celebration of work,
in the meaningful sense of the word. Work as an activity necessary for
existence, that has both stimulating and calming effects, empties and fills at the same time.
Although it is in essence a market, let this not be a celebration of homo consumens as Fromm rightfully named us but instead one of appreciation and discovery of what skill and
application of self can create, with consumption used only if deemed joyful and beneficial.
The fair was great! I've got to see it grow over the years; good for all the artists involved. I bought a sweet shirt, some bottons, almost a dress AND saw a fantastic table made from stockpiled wood. Great weather too!
